Training isn’t a one-size-fits-all process. Just like school, dogs progress through levels: beginner, intermediate, and advanced. Knowing where your dog is and what they need helps you train more effectively and avoid unnecessary frustration.

Level 1: Puppy School & Foundations

This is where every dog should start. It’s about setting expectations, socialisation, and basic obedience:

  • Name recognition
  • Crate training and housebreaking
  • Sit, down, stay, and recall basics
  • Lead introduction
  • Marker words and timing

How to Know You’re Ready for Next Level?

When your dog consistently responds in low-distraction environments and understands basic commands.

Level 2: Intermediate Training

This stage adds:

  • Duration: Holding commands for longer
  • Distance: Following cues from a few steps away
  • Distraction: Obeying commands in busier environments
  • Trick training: Fun, engaging tasks that build communication

If Your Dog Struggles Here…

Go back to basics! Practice in quieter environments or simplify the command. Mastery at Level 1 is required for success here.

Level 3: Advanced Obedience & Real-Life Skills

This is where training becomes truly impressive:

  • Refined commands with better precision and control
  • High-level distractions
  • Long stays with distance
  • Complex sequences
  • Competition-style training
